1. 1989 Act VIN Plates (Old Style)

• Used on trailers built and approved under the Motor Vehicle Standards Act 1989.

• These plates include the compliance wording: “This vehicle was manufactured to comply with the Motor Vehicle Standards Act 1989.”

• Still required for older trailers being restored, repaired, or re-registered where the original plate is missing or damaged.

2. ROVER / RVSA VIN Plates (New Style)

• Used on trailers approved through ROVER under the Road Vehicle Standards Act 2018 (RVSA).

• No longer require the old compliance statement – instead they focus on the technical data:

  • VIN (17-character)

  • ATM, GTM & Tare Mass

  • Tyre size, load (L) rating & pressure

• Linked to the Register of Approved Vehicles (RAV), which is now the official record of compliance.

• Required for new trailer builds and all vehicles approved under the RVSA system.
