If your side wind stand is becoming hard to wind, slipping, noisy, or damaged internally, replacing or servicing the gears can help restore smooth operation.
This guide walks through the process of disassembling the gearbox section of a side wind stand to access the internal gears and shaft components.

Tools Required
- 1x Hammer
- 1x Flathead Screwdriver
- 1x 3mm Punch
Before You Start
Before disassembling the stand, ensure the foot and handle remain on the same side and in the same orientation during reassembly.
This will help ensure the stand operates correctly once rebuilt.
Step 1 โ Remove the Plastic Caps
Undo the screw holding the two plastic caps in place on the gearbox housing.
Carefully remove the caps and retain the screw for reassembly.
Step 2 โ Loosen the Caps
Using a hammer and flathead screwdriver, gently loosen the caps from the housing.
Take care not to damage the outer housing while prying the caps free.
Step 3 โ Position the Stand
Flip the stand onto its side to provide easier access to the gearbox assembly and internal components.
Step 4 โ Remove Grease and Locate the Roll Pin
Clean away some of the grease inside the gearbox so the internal shaft and roll pin are clearly visible.
Locate the roll pin that secures the shaft assembly.
Step 5 โ Align the Keyway
Rotate and align the keyway with the outer sleeve to allow the shaft components to move freely during removal.
Correct alignment is important to prevent binding.
Step 6 โ Remove the Keyway
Remove the keyway from the shaft.
Keep the keyway in a safe place for reassembly.
Step 7 โ Remove the Side Wind Handle
Carefully remove the side wind handle from the gearbox assembly.
Step 8 โ Remove the Gears
Slide and remove the internal gears from the shaft.
Inspect the gears for:
- Wear
- Chipped teeth
- Rust or contamination
- Excessive movement
Replace any damaged components as required.
Step 9 โ Remove the Roll Pin
Using the 3mm punch and hammer, drive the roll pin from the shaft.
Take care not to damage the shaft during removal.
Step 10 โ Remove the Leg from the Outer Sleeve
Once the roll pin has been removed, slide the leg from the outer sleeve.
The stand is now fully disassembled and ready for servicing, cleaning, or gear replacement.
Inspection Tips
While the stand is apart, inspect:
- Gears
- Shaft surfaces
- Bushes
- Grease condition
- Handle movement
- Internal wear points
Clean old grease thoroughly and apply fresh grease before reassembly.
Reassembly
Reassemble the stand in reverse order, ensuring:
- The keyway is aligned correctly
- The roll pin is fully seated
- Components are adequately greased
- The foot and handle remain in the original orientation
Test operation before reinstalling onto the trailer.
